Long time division rivals Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys have been known for close matchups that would go down to the wire, and the first matchup for the season between these two would be no different. Led by two rookie QB’s, Cardon Wentz (the second overall pick) and Dak Prescott (the 135th overall pick), these two teams would duke it out until a 12 play drive from the Cowboys would see them win in overtime 29-23.
The NFC East was once widely regarded as the toughest division in football generally with no clear cut winner and games that always showed both offensive and defensive prowess. This game was no exception to this rule.
The Eagles came into Dallas feeling pretty good about themselves, they had stunned the offensive juggernaut that was the Pittsburgh Steelers and the projected Superbowl Contenders Minnesota Vikings. Boasting a ferocious defensive line anchored by Fletcher Cox, they would look to choke the run and force Prescott to throw while controlling the ball through Darren Sproles (named starter due to inconsistencies with Ryan Matthews) and Carson Wentz. Wentz would look solid on the day going 32/43 for 202 yards and a TD controlling the field against what everyone thought to be a very weak Dallas Defence. The Eagles defence would rattle Prescott through an orchestrated defensive scheme by Jim Schwartz and lead to his second intercept of the year.
The Cowboys looked to continue their five game win streak alive through rookies Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot, however it would be veterans Dez Bryant and Jason Witten that proved to be the advantage on the day. While Prescott notched up a respectable 19/39 for 287 yards, 2 tds and a lone intercept (his second of his rookie season) the majority of that yardage came from Dez Bryant in his first game back since injury. After an injury to his knee and a cut hand dez made a statement this game with 113 yards and a TD (his first catch from Dak was a 53 yard bomb).
In a hotly contested match that went through to overtime, Dak Prescott led the game winning drive, scrambling out of the pocket and finding tight end Jason Whitten in the endzone to win a thriller of a game.
